Melons also a botanical fruit though never used as a vegetable are grown in the same way as a vegetable but always considered a culinary fruit and indeed included in the fruit section of books but the vegetable section of seed catalogues. No way is pumpkin a fruit. Pumpkins arent the only fruitvegetable to suffer under a veil of uncertainty either.
All this enthusiasm for pumpkin has us wondering if it is classified as a fruit or a vegetable. In addition to being a fruit pumpkins also fall into the category of gourds and squash. A fruit is the usually edible reproductive body of a seed plant Pumpkins are edible and if youve ever cut one open you know its full of seeds so the pumpkin is the fruit of the pumpkin vine.
By definition a fruit can be a vegetable but a vegetable cannot be a fruit. By the above definition all other varieties of squash are also fruit. Peanuts are legumes not nuts.
The big pumpkins mini pumpkins acorn squash spaghetti squash zucchini and ornamental gourds are all different cultivars of the same species. If you split the pumpkin into two parts of course you will see inside it consists of seeds. Is pumpkin a fruit and why.
But because it cant be both lets get to the root of it. However in culinary terms it is mostly referred to as a vegetable. Vegetables on the other hand are the edible portion of plants such as leaves stems roots bullbs flowers and tubers.
Pumpkin fruits are a type of botanical berry known as a pepo which is known as large melon in GreekPumpkins normally found in yellow orange white green color have smooth and ribbed skin. Stems leaves roots and even flower buds are considered to be vegetables. A fruit is defined as the usually edible reproductive body of a seed plant Pumpkins are definitely edible not to mention delicious and if youve cut into one to carve a jack-o-lantern you know that theyre absolutely full of seeds.
Since fruits are seed-bearing structures and pumpkins contain a gooey pulp with a wealth of seeds known as pepitas they are definitely fruits. And if you think that thats wild get this. According to the Farmers Almanac a pumpkin is a fruit.
So this was the result of my random pondering over the question is pumpkin a fruit or a vegetable. Because pumpkins are less sweet and more savory from a culinary perspective we categorize. Why because it has seeds pulp and it grows on a flowering plant.
Pumpkin is a Fruit Since pumpkins develop from the flowering part of a pumpkin vine and also contain seeds they are in fact a fruit. The common terms for plants of the genera Cucurbita Pumpkin and Lagenaria are bees but pumpkins are also technically pumpkins. Whichever way this goes we love pumpkin in all its glory just the same.
These terms include various fruits and vegetables such as tomatoes cucumbers bananas and watermelons. Fruits have a more delicate flavor. Technically pumpkin is a pumpkin but technically it is a pumpkin and by definition not a fruit.
Pumpkins are annual plants in the genus of Cucurbita and cultivated for their fruits or seeds. Regardless of its label as a fruit or vegetable pumpkin makes for some of the 101. So pumpkin is a fruit not a vegetable it grows from creeping plants on other plants or on twigs.
So what else makes a pumpkin a pumpkin. Pumpkin is a fruit as it has all the essential features to botanically fit in the definition of a fruit. All pumpkins are winter squash- mature fruit of certain species in the genus Cucurbita.
Pumpkins are a fruit. Pumpkins are also considered giant berries since a berry is defined as a fleshy pulpy and edible fruit that may contain seeds. Generally people use the word pumpkin when referring to various species of pumpkins squashes and gourds.
